Leonotis Flowers (from the Greek Leon – Lion, Otis – Ear) goes by several names, Wild Dagga, Devils Tobacco, Cape Hemp and of course Lions Ear. Leonotis is from the Lamiaceae Family of plants.

The plant can grow as high 8 feet, and it is the distinctive flower that gives it its name.

Leonotis is native to Africa, especially South Africa where it has been used in traditional medicine by the Khoikhoi tribe for centuries.

In the traditional medicine of Africa, Leonotis has been used as a remedy for snake bites, as a charm to keep snakes away, a cure for dysentery, colds and coughs, the leaves were even added to the drinking water of poultry to prevent sickness. Leonotis has also been known to be used as a purgative, a treatment for tapeworm, influenza, tuberculosis and bee and scorpion stings.

It has been reported that smoking Leonotis leads to euphoric state of mind. The euphoria is caused by the active ingredient Leonurine.

The leaves and flowers can be smoked together or separately. The leaves are fairly unpleasant to smoke and smell bad, while the flowers are, in fact quite pleasant and more potent than the leaves.

The same affects can be experienced by brewing the leaves or flowers in to a tea, and when brewed in larger amounts it is said that it can induce a deep medative sleep with enhanced dreaming.

Leonotis also contains nicotine which can make it addictive.
