Damiana, (pronounced DAM ee  Ah na), from the Tuneraceae Family, is also known as; Turnera Diffusa, Mexican Diamiana, Old Womans Broom or Herba De La Pastora.

Native to Central America, Mexico, South America and the Caribbean, Damiana is a small shrub with small aromatic yellow flowers that smell like Chamomile and fruit that tastes like figs.

Damiana was first recorded by Spanish missionaries when they discovered Mexican Indians making tea from it mixed with sugar to enhance their sexual performance. Damiana is also said to calm nervousness, cure impotence in men, help women achieve orgasm, relive Fybromyalgia, and is used in herbal medicine to treat coughs, constipation and depression.

The Recommended dose for tea is 2-4grammes steeped in 150ml of boiling water for 5-10minuets and taken 3 times daily.  If you wish to use Damiana for medical reasons you must consult a doctor.

Sometimes Damiana is smoked with Passionflower and it is claimed that this can induce lucid dreaming.

Damiana should not be taken by anyone using medication to thin their blood, pregnant or breast feeding women, or if you have any psychiatric disorders.

Although the psychoactive ingredient has yet to be identified, many people point to the chemical Damianin found in the plants structure. The FDA has listed the plant on its GRAS list (Generally Recognized as Safe).

Damiana can be found in herbal cigarettes and is used by Agent Provocateur in their Poudre D’Amour body powder for its aphrodisiac properties.
